Nothing comes easy in the field, and things out of your control will go wrong.[01] Whether it's nasty weather,[02] equipment failures,[03] injuries, flat tires, or just shit luck. It's always the least expected thing at the worst time. You have to say F*ck Failure and improvise,[04] dig out,[05] duct tape it, scream, get your hands dirty, and move on. Because I love this stuff, and in those moments, sometimes the best stories are born.[06-07]
[01] I found the limits of the carbon fiber stabilizer rig busting through snow drifts. I had secured the camera to the stabilizer instead of the black arm. A mistake I will make only once.
[02] DAMN, Unexpected late-season snow drifts with no time to turn back and fix gear. Get low and shoot it handheld.
[03] Tools, not jewels, as they say. Detail shot of that broken stabilizer.
[04] No, this downtree was not scripted. It was an unexpected moment. Luckily, Julian had a chainsaw and a tow strap in his rig.
[05] When the going gets tough, call for a good woman with a substantial shovel. Yes, cars get stuck on these film shoots. Don't believe all the rip-roar of those Super Bowl commercials.
[06-07] We made it to the summit, finger raised. I don't recommend carrying 50 lbs of camera gear solo to the top of Shaley slopes of Mount Guyot, 13,376 ft into the Colorado backcountry.
